Join us for the next installment of the Tata Series on AI and Society as author Madhumita Murgia and the Academy’s President and CEO Nick Dirks dive into societal and ethical issues within the field of artificial intelligence.
Murgia’s new book, Code Dependent – Living in the Shadow of AI, shortlisted for the inaugural Women’s Prize for Non-Fiction, highlights the impact AI is already having around the globe. The book touches on AI’s effects in areas like labor rights, online privacy, discrimination, healthcare, education, government surveillance, autonomy, and more.
Madhumita Murgia is the Artificial Intelligence Editor for the Financial Times. She previously served as an editor and reporter at WIRED as well as The Daily Telegraph and was part of a team conducting research on an AIDS vaccine prior to transitioning to journalism. Murgia won the prestigious Stern-Bryan Fellowship in 2017 and was named the Science & Technology Journalist of the Year at the UK Press Awards in 2024. She holds an MA in science journalism from New York University and studied biology as an undergraduate at the University of Oxford. Murgia also co-hosts the Tech Tonic podcast series.
